A girl walks home Alone at Night is a horror movie shining a light on gender roles in an Iranian city called 'Bad City'. The movie portrays the bad men to be motivated through sex, drugs, and power- particularly over women. In this city there is a girl we are introduced to; this girl rides a skateboard around the city and seems like a normal citizen. But as the movie goes on, we come to find that the girl is actually a vampire and preys on the bad men in the city that take advantage of the women. Things get complicated for the girl when she starts to fall in love with a guy, who is actually a good man, but is hard for her to deal with that, due to all the bad men she's surrounded with in the town.
I went into this movie very excited because I am a huge horror movie fan. And being a horror movie fan, I can tell you one of the main reasons I really enjoy the genre, and that's the fact that the movies always move very quickly. I find they move faster than most genres in the film industry. Though, with 'A girl Walks Home Alone at Night' moved extremely slow to me. When movies start very slow it's so hard for me to stay engaged, and by the time it really begins I'm already bored of it. But- I can't say this for this particular movie. Although it was slow, I found that the details and message on feminism made it engaging enough to get through it. I was not excited when I saw the movie was in black and white, but I think that making it black and white was actually such a good decision from the director, Ana. It allowed me to see details I would have most likely missed if the movie was in color. Out of 36,658 IMDb voters, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night was given a score of 6.9/10. Out of those voters, 7.3% of them gave the movie its highest rating of a 10/10; and 2.3% gave the movie its lowest rating of a 1/10. I can't say I was surprised with the score the movie was given, not because I didn't think it was good but I think horror movies are really a hit or miss with a lot of people. Some people just don't like the genre at all, which will usually pan out to not enjoying the movie. I enjoyed the movie, I thought it was an interesting concept. I do believe the concept of a vampires have been done so many times in film history, and often times hard to perfect, but I think this film did a really great job at making it uniquely their own.
